How Much Does CNC Machining Cost? A Complete Pricing GuideCNC

There is no single 'CNC machining price' — every part is quoted on material, geometry, tolerance, quantity and finish. Understanding these drivers helps you budget accurately and cut cost without cutting corners.
Material selection sets the floor cost — aluminum is cheaper to machine than titanium or Inconel.
Material Cost
Raw material often accounts for 20–40% of part cost. Aluminum is economical; stainless steel and titanium are much more expensive. Sizing the stock to the part reduces waste.
Complexity & Set-up
Every additional set-up, operation and tool change adds cost. Parts machinable in fewer set-ups — or with 5-axis — are cheaper to produce.
Part complexity (pockets, undercuts, thin walls) directly drives machining time and tool wear.
Tolerances
Tight tolerances require slower cutting and more inspection, directly raising cost. Keep tight tolerance only on features that truly need it.
Volume & Economies of Scale
Per-part cost drops sharply with quantity because set-up and programming are spread across more units. Prototypes cost the most per piece; production runs cost the least.
Tight tolerances below ±0.05 mm and fine surface finishes add cost — specify only what you truly need.
Surface Finishing
Anodizing, plating and powder coating add cost. Choose the finish that meets functional requirements — a cosmetic finish on a hidden surface is wasted money.
Five Ways to Reduce Cost
Simplify geometry, relax non-critical tolerances, choose economical materials, batch orders, and involve your supplier early for DFM feedback.
Volume matters: setup time is amortized across the batch, so 1,000 pcs costs far less per piece than 10.
